Silver Medal Award
The American Advertising Federation’s Silver Medal Award Program was established in 1959 to recognize men and woman who have made outstanding contributions to advertising and have been active in furthering the industry’s standards, creative excellence and responsibility in areas of social concern. Annually, AAF member clubs bestow the honor upon outstanding members of their local advertising community.
DEADLINE TO NOMINATe: DECEMBER 31, 2024
Nominees are judged on the following criteria:
Contribution to His/Her Company
The recipient must have achieved success in one of the following areas of work: advertising agency, advertiser, media or advertising service.
Creative Ability
The recipient must have shown a consistent, high degree of original thinking in their field.
Contributions to the General Advancement of Advertising
The recipient must have worked to increase the stature and raise the standards of the advertising profession.
Contributions to the Community
The recipient should be someone who has been active in civic, religious, or other groups dedicated to human or social welfare.
Service to the American Advertising Federation
The honoree should have demonstrated a long-term commitment to the American Advertising Federation Black Hills chapter. Service to the corresponding AAF District and AAF National further solidifies the depth of service.

Meet the 2024 Silver Medal Recipient: Dave smetter
Dave Smetter is the Director of Brand Management and Communications at Black Hills Energy. With his expertise, he takes the lead in driving effective communication strategies and marketing initiatives. Under Dave’s guidance, a comprehensive brand standards guide was developed, elevating Black Hills Energy’s brand persona within the utility industry.
Dave’s contributions extend beyond brand management, as he has spearheaded innovative advertising and marketing campaigns, showcasing the creative and communication importance in an industry where it is traditionally overlooked.
Dave has a wealth of experience in the advertising and marketing industry, having dedicated his entire career to this field. From working in broadcast television as a news anchor, to making executive decisions in consumer marketing for Blue Bunny Ice Cream at Wells, his experience has equipped him with the right tools to lead teams and develop impactful marketing campaigns.
He has been a dedicated member of the American Advertising Federation Black Hills chapter for over six years. His passion for AAF goes beyond serving on the board - he has actively inspired others to get involved and enjoy the benefits. Currently the Second Vice President, Dave joined during challenging times and played a vital role in rejuvenating the chapter. His commitment shines through sponsoring events, hosting at Black Hills Energy, and supporting all that AAF offers.
Dave is always the first person to sign up for a volunteer experience. He constantly encouraging our team to give back to the community, with team building events built around a service project. He has participated in Feeding South Dakota, YFS Gifts for Girls, and many more. He is truly a bright light in the community.
